Harry Gault was the founder of Strabane Concert Brass back in 1973 when the band was known as Tyrone Youth Band. The contribution that Harry made to the band's developement and success is impossible to measure but suffice to say that without him the band would not exist today. Harry grew up in Belfast and was a French Horn player with the City of Belfast Youth Orchestra. He gained an L.T.C.L. Performer's Diploma but soon decided that his musical career lay in Brass Bands and conducting. He secured a post as Brass Tutor with the Western Education and Library Board Music Service, and as part of his work there formed the Tyrone Youth Band. The band's first contest performance saw them in last place of the 2nd Grade Brass Section, but remarkably 8 year's later they made their first appearance at the European Championships playing "Journey into Freedom" and "Connotations" at the Royal Albert Hall in 1981. |
