Strabane Concert Brass was formed in 1979 by Harry Gault from the Tyrone Youth Band(TYB), which was part of the Western Education and Library Board Music Service. As TYB the band won two Junior and two Intermediate championships before joining the senior ranks in 1977. The band worked closely with the highly successful Saint Colman's High School band, from which they drew a substantial percntage of their junior intake until, in 2005, Saint Colman's amalgamated with local schools to become Holy Cross College.
The band's first Senior Section victory came with 'James Cook - Circumnavigator' in 1981 and brought the band's first invitation to the European Brass Band Championships held in the Royal Albert Hall in 1982.

The band's main focus will always be the social, charitable and communal events it is asked to play at, however this does not take away from the fact that SCB are contesting band of note. In addition to radio broadcasts, the band are well known across Ireland and Britain for their television broadcasts such as BBC's 'Songs of Praise', UTV's 'Kelly Live', ITV's 'Highway' presented by the late Harry Secombe, and having appeared for many years on BBC Northern Ireland's christmas broadcast of 'Sing Carols'. Not bad for a band made up of players who hail from all walks of life, in a community that has been detached from the mainstream of life in Northern Ireland.
